JD x WGSN Panel Discussion: Redefining the Future of Fashion, Design, and Careers

To give an insight into what the future is like for this fashion industry, design seekers, and the future creative fraternity, JD Institute of Fashion Technology recently organized an eye-opening panel discussion in association with WGSN, the world’s number one trend forecasting agency.

This engaging and empowering session featured Mr. Rinesh Dalal, Director of JD Institute, in conversation with Mr. Puneet Dudeja, Director at WGSN South Asia. Together, they explored some of the most pressing questions around emerging fashion and consumer trends, sustainability, technology, emotional design, and career opportunities for young aspirants.

According to him, joy is no longer just about fleeting happiness but about finding moments of meaning in everyday life. “ Even when you’re walking down the street, the ability to pause and feel joy in something ordinary is where consumers are heading,” he explained.

Self-care, both physical and emotional, is another growing priority. From wellness products to mindful design, consumers today want experiences that nurture their well-being. Complementing this is the rising preference for comfort and relaxed living. Fashion that feels effortless, inclusive, and in tune with one’s authentic self will continue to dominate in the years to come.

Technology and the Question of AI

The discussion also broached one of the most talked-about subjects in the world today, Artificial Intelligence. As technology such as ChatGPT and fashion-tech apps make their way into creative fields, the audience was keen to hear if AI is a threat or an opportunity.

Puneet was frank in his answer. He recognized AI as a huge enabler but warned against total dependence. ” AI is helpful when it augments your creativity, not when it substitutes it,” he stressed. As the conversation moved toward trend forecasting, Puneet revealed how WGSN works behind the scenes. Their proprietary STEP framework studies signals of change across society, technology, environment, politics, industry, and creativity.

But interestingly, he emphasized that numbers alone cannot predict the future. “ Data can only give you patterns. True forecasting is a mix of analytics and intuition,” he said.

He also highlighted the role of emotions in shaping fashion trends. From revenge shopping to impulse buying, emotions drive consumer behavior far more than rational choices. Retailers and designers who understand this emotional dimension will always have an edge. “ Shopping has become a form of therapy, and experiences that spark emotions will define successful brands,” he added.

Shifting the focus to career opportunities, Rinesh asked Puneet about his own professional journey. Puneet, who comes from a finance and economics background, shared that he never imagined working in the design industry. His entry into WGSN was unplanned, but what kept him thriving was his passion for the work he eventually fell in love with.

Addressing students directly, he said, “Passion is the real driver of any career. If you love what you’re doing, long hours won’t feel like a burden. Work will feel like joy, not stress.”

This was a powerful message for young creative minds. Success in fashion or any creative industry does not come from following trends blindly but from aligning personal passion with professional pursuits.

Sustainability, Tech, and A Transparent Future

In the open Q&A session, students asked questions on fashion tech, waste management, and the future of sustainability. Puneet greeted these with equal honesty and optimism.

He discussed the contribution of fashion-tech apps to empowering designers, likening them to Canva, which leveled design across industries. He asked students to adopt technology as an enabler of creativity.

On sustainability, he noted that consumer awareness is now forcing brands to be transparent about sourcing and production. “Transparency is the new sustainability,” he said, pointing out how even product descriptions on e-commerce platforms are evolving to meet consumer expectations.

He also acknowledged the rise of waste management startups in India but admitted that genuine solutions are still evolving. What matters most is how each individual chooses to reduce, reuse, and rethink consumption.
